Gifts + Passion + Values = Purpose (AUDIO VERSION ON THIS PAGE)

I fervently suggest we all recognize what our Gifts + and Passions+ are, relish them, and find a positive platform to share them and impact the world around us.

However, it is possible, logical, and acceptable to go to a job every day that does not leverage our Gifts +, and/or does not connect to our Passions+. For many of us, work is just an avenue to get paid. Period. Being among the ranks of the employed is a triumph in, and of, itself!  Our work does not have to be the source of our Happiness or connected to our Purpose; work may simply be the means of funding the Life we want to lead – and leading the Life you want is the REAL meaning of success!

Success is following the pattern of life one enjoys most." – Al Capp.

The ‘pattern of life one enjoys most’ is an indication of your personal values; and success is defined by your personal values. For example, if you value money: your definition of success may include a large salary. If you value family: having free time to spend with loved ones is included in your definition of success, and so on…

With that being said, the first step to success is defining if for yourself, which includes identifying your own values.  Our friends at mindtools.com define values as “…the things that you believe are important in the way you live and the way you work. Values (should) determine your priorities, and, deep down, values are probably the measures you use to tell if your life is turning out the way you want it to…”

Our values are our motivators. When they are met, we are satisfied; when they are not met we are frustrated (pissed). How do we identify our personal values, you ask? Here are some easy/quick tools that can help:

·         Clarity on Fire, Passion Profile Quiz

·         Alchemy for Managers offers a list of values to consider, rank, and choose from

Our values help us decide what to say “yes” to and what to say “no” to; which job to take; whom to love, and so on… Our values are our internal compass. It’s important to know what guides us, and how our guides (values) can impact others and be impacted by others in return.

My series of recent journal entries (Gifts, Passions, and Values) were inspired by career counselor, Richard Lieder, who offers this equation in response to being asked the question: “So, what do I want to do with my life?”

Lieder explains: G + P + V = C

·         “G” stands for “Gifts”

·         “P” for “Passions”

·         “V” for “Values”

Together, they form your “C” – Your Calling.

My FAVORITE career website and job search engine TheMuse, has a short article titled “How to Find the Answer to ‘What Do I Want to Do With My Life?’ ” It’s a great, quick read and synopsis for Lieder’s concept equation of Gifts + Passion + Values = Your Calling.

Have fun discovering who you are, my friend.
